The 2025 paintings and works on paper in the series Between Mexicali and Jacumba redirect common conceptions of the US-Mexico border by documenting a small yet environmentally rich stretch of land between Mexicali, MX, and Jacumba, CA. Focusing on discrete moments within the topography, it becomes possible to consider the borderlands as an open system embedded in “deep time,” parallel yet removed from political rhetoric. Works that begin with site-specific photographs become fluid, sublime meditations on the substantive, enigmatic terrain residing along the border’s incongruent manifest.
